All things considered... Not too bad.
Fun layout if you like links style golf with lots of waste areas. Challenging course, plenty long from the back tees. Conditions are marginal right now but could be worse. A few bad spots on the greens.
The Dunes is Back!!!
I have been playing golf at The Dunes for the past 16 years. I have seen the course in it's best and very worse condition. This is easily one of the best course layouts in the state of Florida, and in my opinion the best Arthur Hills design I have played. I was heartbroken to hear the course was closed due to insufficient funding, and that it had become completely unrecognizable. Some friends and I decided to give it a chance, and boy are we glad we did! It isn't perfect, but worth waaay more than the $16 each we payed to play. Our hats are off to the management staff for doing a spectacular job of bringing this hidden gem back to the form it deserves. Can't wait to come back!
greens and fairways are in great shape
people aren't aware of what a great deal this coarse is. I love getting the tee time I want an always a great price for this coarse. We played a two man scramble from the back tees and shot 8 under. Green are putting true and the fairways are in good shape
Good value
The course was good but somewhat dry due to summer conditions. It is fairly challenging but for the money I paid I was pleased.
Course Condition
The greens were in very good condition. The fairways were not that great, but okay. The sand traps, of which there are some on every hole,
were in poor condition, not full of weeds, but not very well kept with many rain drainage gullies not filled in. The tee boxes were okay, but not great by any means! The rough was poor a few places, but not the worst. Otherwise, the course is kind of challenging and somewhat scenic. There was only one water hole and that was a parallel lake along side of a par 4 hole. I enjoyed the day until the 17th hole when a short rain showed up. Didn't last long as I was able to finish that hole and the 18th with no rain. The course doesn't seem to be very well played and thus easy to get a tee time at almost any time, at least at this time of year.
A little sad. Not worth the drive or the money (at any price).
My reviews are generally pretty forgiving, and I don't like to be negative about any round of golf. Unfortunately there is very little positive to say about The Dunes in Brooksville. We only met one staff member, and she was working the desk, the beverage cart and the little restaurant, and she seemed nice enough. The golf course itself is in the worst shape of any I have played in the area. It is almost like it has been closed, and they reopened without putting any effort into making it playable. They have a sign saying they are under new management, so this could actually be the case. The fairways have very little grass, and they are quite bumpy. The greens are very long, and they have a lot of weeks growing in them. The clubhouse is pretty spartan, and the pro shop has almost no merchandise in it. If they are still in business next year (I would be a little surprised), you might give them a try, but keep your expectations low. We played very inexpensively through our Golf Now booking, and we both agreed it was not worth driving there to play for free. Having said all this, and giving you fair warning, I wish them the best, and hope they can make a go of it. I hate to see any golf course go away because people depend on it for their income. If you want to make a contribution to their future success, by all means give The Dunes some of your business, just don't come away mad, just a little sad.
good long course
really liked the course, layout. was a little long for my game, big hitters will love it.
The Dunes
This place has been thru the ringer tis past yr. 1st time in 8 yrs. I played here. Condition not that good, but foe the price, I will be back. They are getting better by the day
Sad!
Great layout for sure! The condition of the course was terrible. Got a great rate and would play again. It is sad that the amount of play does not support the maintenance needed to keep it in good shape. Hope things turn around. A real gem of a layout!
Pleasantly Surprised
Greens were in much better condition than expected since the course was closed for a while. Fairways had some bad spots but easily corrected by playing preferred lies. The sand was quite good. Well worth the discounted price to play
Striving for improvement
Last played this course in the late 1980's to early 90's. Back then it was in awesome shape. I saw pictures from last year of four foot high weeds covering the fairways. A great deal of improvement has been made since then, but still needs some work. Great value and challenging. Enjoyed my round.
Big Disappointment
The course layout is amazing. Course condition is worse I've ever played. Only cost $10 so not too disappointed. Wouldn't be surprised if the course is closed in days. Could have been a fantastic day but all weeds, minimal grass and partial greens made it pretty bad.
Fun Course
I enjoy this course every time we play it. The staff is always courteous. The course is a little challenging with all the sand traps.
Getting better
Played the dunes for the first time since it re-opened and was better than I expected. The fairways need some work, but greens are mostly in good shape just slow as you would expect. For the price, definitely worth coming back.
always fun to play
The course is coming along. Each time I have made the trip the course has improved. What A great layout! Bring insect repellent, the flies are biters.
Best Golf Deal in America !!!
The Dunes is a true dilema of extreme magnitude ... this course is jinxed because of LOCATION ONLY ... if this course were anywhere south of Weeki Wachee like Clearwater ... oh my !!!! ... only World Woods is a better course and it's location is just as bad ... I have played all the "so called" Tampa's finest and Sarasota's gems too and I always come back to The Dunes ... why ? ... PRICE and VALUE and I live in Pasco County ... $11 to play this course on Saturday or Sunday ? ... YOU go elsewhere and you are wasting your money unless the drive is TO FAR ... if the drive is possible ... GO TO THE DUNES or World Woods only ... The Dunes is the BEST VALUE superstar golf course in the Tampa Bay region and the course conditions are good enough to justify a 4 STAR RATING because of the layout and price ...$ PRICE $... did I say PRICE $$$ ???? ... BEST IN TAMPA BAY ... Course is one of the greats in all of Florida and yes it could be nicer but that's ok .... for $11 this course is a SUPERSTAR just as it is ... if you "doll it up" it wouldn't be $11 ... it's AFFORDABLE !!! ... you will see me at World Woods now and then when I'm STEPPING UP to impress my friends or visitors however I am at The Dunes 98% of my GOLF MONEY $$$$... University Park, The Legacy, Wentworth, Lake Jovita are ok ONLY ... and EXPENSIVE !!!! ... if you haven't tried The Dunes or World Woods you are getting ripped off and especially NOW that the rates are the lowest all year ... Brooksville golf will always be the KING of TAMPA BAY but that drive ... oh boy
Surf taxi
good for the money.Needs some work on the fairways, good otherwise.
A bit disapointed
I have played this course a number of times but not in the last 18 months before today. The course layout is excellent but the conditions need quite a bit of work. Most of the fairways are lacking in grass and while I do not mind a bit of weeds they seem to be everywhere even on the greens.
I am hoping that they are working in bringing this course back to where I remember it since the layout is excellent. But, of course only time will tell. I am hoping for the best.
Bring your sand wedge
Great challenging course right in the middle if nature. What an enjoyable round even if the course got the better of me! I will definitely be back. The extra drive is worth it and I certainly recommend giving this course a try.
Poor Management
6 of us never played here before drove over an hour to experience a new course. When we got rained out after a few holes, management refused to give even a 9 hole rain check because we booked on golf now at a discount. Absolutely no cover from the rain. Here are 6 golfers who will never go back and I advise everyone to do yourself a favor and skip this course!
I guess you didn't mind that there were no fairways, the traps weren't maintained, and the greens had weeds on them.
