Needs a little times and attention
Since this course was closed for a while it needs to rebound. The greens were good however a little barren.the fairways are patchy in spots but for the money we had a great time. The staff was wonderful, courteous and accommodating. The pace was awesome as no one was there. A solid rainy season , good weed pre-emergent should bring this course closer to its previous condition.
Love The Dunes
I knew that the course was under new management and they are trying hard to restore the course to the condition it used to be in previous years, so I had no great expectations when I played. However, I was pleasantly surprised - other than the fairways which will need a lot of TLC and nice growing weather to get back in shape, the tees and greens (other than a few bad spots on some greens) were good and of course the tremendous layout is still there.
Due to the conditions, the rates have been reduced significantly and it is very good value overall for such a wonderful track. I will return a few times in March and April when hopefully the fairways will be in better shape.
Potential is there!
I've played this course a few years back and loved it and just recently decided to play again even though it is still rebounding from being closed for a while. So here's my take on it...
The fairways definitely need a little work, but they are still completely playable. The first few greens we played had some patchy areas, but the rest of the greens were in pretty decent shape, especially the back nine. This course is definitely on it's way back. How far they want to take this course, I don't know. But I can say that the layout of this course is just spectacular. It could easily be a $150/round course if the fairways and rough were plush. The layout is just that good. The 'Dunes' is certainly the description of it. I think there is just as much sand and bunkers as there is grass. Not your typical florida course at all. And for $28/person for the rounds we played on Friday, we feel we got much more than our money's worth.
So if you're deciding to play here at the beginning of the year, don't expect perfect conditions, even though the most important part (greens) are in pretty good shape, but expect to see an attractive layout, unique to Florida, and a super friendly staff. It's worth it.
What happened
The Dunes used to be my favorite golf course in Florida - not any more. Learned once we got there that the course closed last year and just reopened. It showed. Fairways were terrible. They were like hitting off a cow pasture. The greens were in rough shape too. The course was a mere shell of what it used to be. The course is just as tough as ever, but the condition of the course was such that I can't recommend it. It hurts me to say this and I hope the course comes back to what it used to be. It has a long way to go to get there.
Challenging course
This course is challenging . There is not a course near us quite like this course, It is a great course for the price.
Welcome back
The course is well on its way back. Bunkers are awsome very challenging. Greens are great. Cant wait to see this course in the spring. only down fall was no beer but I understand.
Enjoyed very much
Reminded me of links courses of England, Scotland, Wales except more hills. Loved the challenge of the fairways as some had lots of grass and others had some bare spots. That was great. Good mixture of inland and links. Greens could have been a little faster, but they were still very good. It would be easy to make those greens unplayable for too much speed if not careful. Looks like the new ownership is putting in some hours to bring the course back. It does take time. We are definitely coming back. Jen was a great help after the round. Pointed us to a great little sports bar with good food and friendly staff.
A Must Play!
My husband and I played the course about 10 years ago and we knew we wanted to play it again if we had the opportunity. The course wasn't in quite as good of condition as it was 10 years ago but it is under new management and is coming along nicely due to the TLC that it is now getting. We enjoyed the round immensely and will definitely be back.
Course open again
Still needs some attention but should soon be back to first class condition - most greens excellent but more growth on some fairways needed.
a real gem
The course had only been open for two weeks after being closed for several months so it wasn't in the greatest of shape...I hope the new owners keep the price affordable for everyone because it would be a shame to lose this beauty, the course has character, fantastic golf holes with a great layout, four sets of tees...the course is very playable and I can't wait to go back.
Needs TLC
The greens are coming back but the fairways are horrible. They have several kinds of grass growing in the fairways which makes them very lumpy and hard to hit from. This used to be a premier GC in the area holding the Canadien Q school. Needs a lot of work to get back to that status.
Not worth he money
Very disappointed to say the least. The last time I played this course was about 3 years ago & it was remarkable!!!! Too bad you can't get your money back for being unhappy. 1st of all there were only 4 cars in the parking lot @ 10:30 am. I should have known something was wrong @ that time. The girl @ the desk said we were starting on the back because the front greens were being cut & would be done by the time we finish the back 9. SHE LIED!!! He was cutting the practice green then headed for the 1st green while we were on our way to it. The back greens were hairy the front was 2 " high!!!!!! Fairways, tee boxes not much grass all weeds! Bees (yelow jackets) on numerous greens. No seums chewed you up. Not worth any amount of money if you ask me. Will not go back!!!
We are sorry you are disappointed. We are working very hard to get the course back to where it used to be. We just reopened after being closed and the course is coming along. We hope you give us another chance soon.
Too much money for rough conditions
The greens were reseeded and hadn't been mowed in two weeks, per the one person we saw grooming the whole course. This experience was when a bargain really isn't. The fairways were rough. One third of the greens were gnarly. If someone took proper care of this course it could be spectacular. We loved the open lay out. Their are a very few homes on this course which is a definite plus for Florida. Please. Someone fix up this course. Sorry to say we will not return unless we hear major improvements have been made. It is not worth our dollar. Golf now, you let us down. We should have been told the course was under construction.
We are so sorry for your disappointment. A new management team just reopened this course after it has sat closed for a while and we are working hard to get the conditions back to where they used to be. We will continue to put time, money, and effort into The Dunes and ask that you give us another chance.
Course had been closed for months. Staff is working to get the course back.
Wonderful layout. Just reopened recently, it will take time to get the course back to where it was before they had to close. Fairways and greens still need lots of work. Worth playing as long as the price stays in the $20-$25 range.
Have played the course many times before they closed, its a great layout, just hope they can bring it back.
I last played this course in January 2012, and I can tell the disappointed posters that it was *not* disappointing. I was sad to hear of it's closure, and am very happy to hear it's making a comeback. I can't wait to play here again.
Unrealized Potential
The layout of the holes is exceptional with quality shot values throughout the course. Unfortunately course conditions need improvement. Although it isn't pure golf by playing preferred lies, it is prudent at the Dunes given the sparse growth of grass in the fairways. More importantly, the greens need significant attention as a fungus has infected many of them and is overtaking the Bermuda grass to the point of almost making reading the greens correctly inconsequential to holing putts. I played the Dunes about a month ago and the greens were a little better then, so it appears that the fungus issue is advancing. Too bad because the challenging course design could be a treat to play everyday if course conditions were better.
Thank you for coming out and playing. We are working hard to get the course back in shape after we just reopened it. I hope you give us another chance and come out to see us again.
